Quick-fire treble

We started the New Year in the best possible style on Sunday with a quick-fire treble at Exeter.

It was really good to see our horses in such good form after several results went against us in the final weeks of 2016.

These things tend to balance themselves out and the team had plenty to cheer at Exeter as Neon Wolf, Space Oddity and Air Horse One dominated the first three races on the card on ground that became more testing by the minute.

First to strike was Neon Wolf, who is unbeaten in all three starts. Although fog obscured most of his race at Uttoxeter, Noel Fehily later reported that he won there despite being much too keen for his own good.

Noel gave him a beautiful educational ride at Exeter, settling him nicely just off the pace before moving through to challenge going to the third last flight.

Once in front Neon Wolf kept on well all the way to the line, showing a willing attitude. He is a hugely exciting prospect, a proper chaser in the making and jumps his hurdles as if they are fences.

That will become slicker with experience and I now have to decide whether to run him in another novice hurdle or step him up in grade.

Space Oddity then put an end to a frustrating sequence of defeats with a spirited run from the front in the Thurlestone Hotel Handicap Hurdle.

With a light weight in demanding conditions the change of tactics made sense and Kieron Edgar carried them out to good effect as Space Oddity comfortably saw off the persistent challenge of Here's Herbie.

It helped that Space Oddity is more settled now, jumps very well and kept galloping.

Noel took a nasty fall in the second race but he bounced back straight away with another fine ride in victory on Air Horse One in the maiden hurdle.

This horse has been running well without winning and the most encouraging thing is that his jumping is finally coming together after a lot of practise.

He was always getting the better of a duel with the favourite Coeur Blimey over the last two hurdles and winning with something to spare should boost his confidence so hopefully he can progress again.
