New Year's Day double
A double at Exeter on New Year’s Day extended the robust recent form of our team.
First to strike in testing conditions that suit him so well was Captain Drake
who won the three mile handicap Chase by five and a half lengths from The Kings Writ
with the help of a confident ride by Sean Bowen.
The first two shared the lead throughout until Captain Drake
edged ahead at the final fence before keeping on dourly on the flat on his third start over fences.
He was running well last time until falling two out in a competitive race over the same course & distance as today and has improved since then.
As Captain Drake
shapes like an out and out stayer we have it in the back of our minds that he would be well suited by a test like the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter the day after the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
First, though we’ll look to run him again in a month’s time while conditions are in his favour.
then completed the double with a classy performance in the New Year’s Day Maiden Hurdle over two and a quarter miles.
dropped him in early on before letting him stride on heading to the final bend.
He is such an exciting horse with a big future and while we’re sure he will stay well there is no need to step him up in trip while the ground is so deep.
Now that King Roland
has broken his duck over hurdles we can raise our sights and make a plan for the rest of the season.
