Golden Birthday gained by far the most important success of his brief career with a brilliant victory from the front in the Bet totequadpot Handicap Hurdle at Newton Abbot on Saturday which carried a first prize of £22,521.
While this race had been the plan since his previous win at the track, it looked so competitive that we would readily have settled for his finishing in the first three.
So it was something of a surprise to see him bowling along in charge, out on his own, jumping fluently on his way to a highly impressive ten length success from the 3-1 favourite Wait For Me.
While it wasn't the plan to make the running the beauty of having Noel Fehily riding for you is that he is alive to every possible scenario.
Aware that there was unlikely to be much pace in the early stages Noel was keen to be handy and then seized the initiative once he realised nothing was prepared to take him on.
He judged things to perfection from the front, skipped a few lengths clear on Golden Birthday down the back straight for the final time, and was fully in control from that point.
While Noel and I both felt that the horse would enjoy the step up in trip now that he relaxes and settles better on ground that he loves I can't say we expected him to dominate throughout in such an imposing manner.
Golden Birthday is on an upward curve at the moment and though I don't have another target for him hopefully he can run again before the ground changes.
He will then have a holiday before returning for a spring campaign. He is from a very good jumping family and further ahead I'd like to think he will make an exciting novice over fences next season.
