Drake sets up Easter Challenge
Captain Drake won nicely on his handicap debut over three miles at Southwell on Monday although the winning margin of sixteen lengths was highly misleading.
Having led from around halfway he was joined on the final bend by Tomkevi who was bidding to complete a hat trick.
It was nip and tuck between the pair all the way up the straight and they were still locked together at the last hurdle where Tomkevi made a bad mistake and unseated his rider.
Noel Fehily felt our horse would have come out on top but it would have been tight.
We were in two minds to run Captain Drake on ground that was officially good and only took the decision to let him take his chance in the qualifier for a valuable handicap on Easter Saturday after Noel walked the course.
Ideally he would want much softer conditions, which will hopefully prevail when he goes for the Challenger Stayers Hurdle Series Final at Haydock.
Like quite a few of ours Captain Drake was a little off colour in January but he is very much going the right way now and should make a useful novice over fences next season.
