If The Cap Fits gained his first Grade 1 success at Aintree on Saturday with the help of a never say die ride from Sean Bowen.

It was a brilliant result in the Ryanair Stayers Hurdle for his owners Paul & Clare Rooney and all our team.

If The Cap Fits has been consistent all season and we were confident that the step up in trip plus the addition of cheek pieces would bring out the best in him.

It was all going to plan as he challenged at the final flight but he made a bad mistake there which pitched him onto his nose.

It looked like we were cooked after that as he had ground to make up on Apple’s Jade and Roksana.

But Sean is fiercely determined and in If The Cap Fits he had a willing partner.

Somehow they found a narrow seam between Apple’s Jade and Roksana and finished so strongly they got up to snatch the prize in the final strides.

Our horse had every excuse to give up as there wasn’t much room between the other pair. In fact the gap was tiny but he wanted it badly and ran his heart out.

Thankfully If The Cap Fits was fine afterwards when he was taken off to the wash down area as a precaution.

We have always felt he was a high class horse and now, deservedly he is a Grade 1 winner.

Noel Fehily, who recently retired, has always believed in him and has played a big part in educating him in all their races together so we were delighted he was with us in the winner’s enclosure afterwards.

It looks like we have a proper horse for the top staying races next season and a brilliant young jockey to ride him.
