Golden opportunity

Golden Birthday enjoyed the unexpected luxury of a nice schooling round of jumping at Stratford on Saturday as three of his four opponents in the novice chase were withdrawn before the race.

That left him as a 1-7 shot to beat the only other runner Cotton Jenny in an uncompetitive match.

Kieron Edgar kept things simple by allowing Golden Birthday to lead at a sensible pace and the horse was never in any danger despite being eased after jumping the final fence.

There will be tougher challenges ahead for the versatile Golden Birthday who has done so well for his owner Gary Stevens having now won ten times in his colours.

That has been achieved in all disciplines, a bumper, hurdles, flat, all-weather and chases.

He loves the the quicker ground at this time of year, is gaining confidence with each race over fences and we will continue to try to place him to best effect.
