Secret to success
Secret Door survived a bump at the final flight on the way to a gutsy victory in the final of the £50,000 Challenger Mares' Handicap Hurdle series at Haydock on Saturday.
She finished third in the same race a year ago and was ready to run in the autumn before a set back which kept her off the track until just over three weeks ago when she won nicely at Ludlow off a mark of 109.
Raised 6 lbs for that success we felt she had a decent chance at Haydock equipped with cheek pieces for the first time to help her concentrate.
She travelled well just off the pace before easing into the lead at the final hurdle and though strongly challenged on the run in she found plenty for pressure to beat the smart mare Poppy Kay by a neck.
It was good to see Secret Door win such a valuable prize and as she has had a light campaign it's possible she could run again in the coming weeks.
That decision, however, could be in the hands of the clerk of the weather as we badly need rain with the ground everywhere drying up by the minute.
