Then it was on to Warwick where Noel won the maiden hurdle on Black Mischief over two miles with something to spare before he completed the double on Golden Birthday in a tight finish to the Class 3 handicap hurdle over two miles three furlongs.
We had deliberately kept Black Mischief back for the new season since he fell at Wincanton at the last flight in January when set for an easy success.
He is a nice prospect who will have a break now and will get further. Golden Birthday only ran at Warwick after he was balloted out of the Swinton Hurdle at Haydock, which was probably just as well as John Constable was a very easy winner of that race.
Golden Birthday is a horse who has to go left handed and almost threw the race away by jumping sharply left handed at each of the final two flights.
But he then rallied well and found more to hold the strong late challenge of Red Indian. As Golden Birthday likes good ground we will keep him going over the summer and maybe step him up a little further in trip.
