Acorn off the mark

The hard earned success of Little Acorn in a mares' maiden hurdle at Kempton on Monday took our score to six winners from twelve runners in the last fortnight.

What is really pleasing is that three of those victories came from horses we didn't manage to win with in the season just ended.

While Little Acorn has always worked like a smart horse at home she has never shown the same ability on the racecourse hence the decision to run her in cheekpieces for the first time on Monday.

They certainly helped as did a typically determined ride from Noel Fehily who made up her mind for her when it seemed on the final bend that she might not get to the free running leader Pleasure Dome.

She certainly had to work hard to make up ground on Pleasure Dome before putting her seal on the race on the flat.

This was a significant triumph for the well bred Little Acorn who is the daughter of Whiteoak, best known as the first winner of the David Nicholson Mares' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

A future at stud beckons for Little Acorn though it will be up to her owners Andy & Sharon Meashan to decide when they call a halt on her racing career.
