Our exciting French import Vukovar showcased his talents with an impressive first victory over fences in this country at Newbury on Saturday.

Wearing a tongue tie for the first time against three older rivals he jumped fluently bar one mistake, made all the running and was still strong at the finish as he won easily from the Queen's gelding Open Hearted.

It was just what I was hoping to see after his narrow defeat at Warwick.  You could hardly ask more of a four year old at this stage of his career.

Vukovar is a big, strong, imposing horse with the best years ahead of him. We've liked him from the moment he arrived at the yard in the autumn, but he wants two and a half miles now and should stay three miles in time so the Arkle Chase at The Festival is not in our thoughts for him.   At this stage we are still learning with him.

Exciting novice Vukovar, under a front running ride from Noel Fehily, wins in impressive style at Newbury.
With thanks to Julie Drewett of Racehorse Photos for this great shot.
