Sometimes second is the loneliest place in the world. But I have to say I was immensely proud as Rock on Ruby failed by a fast dismissing head to land the Aintree Hurdle on Thursday.

On his first run back over hurdles he came agonisingly close to beating the raging hot favourite The New One with Diakali a couple of inches away in third.

Afterwards Noel Fehily described Ruby as a horse in a million and said he would have won in one more stride.

It was a case of so near and yet so far. One thing is for sure, Ruby will definitely not be racing over fences again.

He is a hurdler through and through and he will always put his heart on the line.
