Mendip in Becher Thriller
Mendip Express came tantalisingly close to registering our first success over the National fences at Aintree on Sunday.
In the end he was just denied by a great old warrior Oscar Time, a course specialist, who found a bit more in the closing stages. But he lost nothing in defeat and second prize of almost £30,000 was decent consolation for finishing less than a length behind the winner.
Mendip Express took a while to warm to the task but the further he went the better he jumped and Will Biddick gave him a brilliant ride.
The horse was a revelation last season, winning his first three chases and this latest fine performance offered the promise of more to come.
At Sandown Vukovar was a bitter disappointment in the Tingle Creek Chase. He was the first one beaten and we were not 100 per cent happy with him afterwards. We will check him over and try to get to the bottom of that.
