New Year Treble
We started 2015 in the best possible way with our first treble on New Year's Day.
Star of the show without question was the stable's flagship Rock On Ruby who continued his outstanding form with a typically resolute victory in the Dornan Engineering Hurdle over two miles, and four and a half furlongs at Cheltenham.
Hard to believe but Noel thinks Ruby could even be getting better at the age of ten! One thing is for sure. I am so lucky to have had a fantastic horse like this from the moment I started training and he has been working with great enthusiasm in recent weeks.
We have already ruled out another tilt at the Champion Hurdle and although I'm not in a hurry to commit Ruby to the World Hurdle I accept that it would be a sin to miss that race as he has such a superb record at Cheltenham. Racing over distances in excess of two miles certainly makes life a bit easier for him as he jumps and travels so well and does not have to force the pace. So he will have an entry in the World Hurdle and we can make up our minds nearer the time.
Thomas Brown kicked off a memorable day for the stable with a courageous success in the opening novice hurdle at Cheltenham.
He dug deep to come back and beat Robinsfirth after being headed shortly after the second last hurdle.
Thomas is a three miler in the making, stays really well and will be aimed at the Albert Bartlett Hurdle at the Festival.
Our day was made complete by the narrow triumph of Assam Black at Exeter in his first handicap.
He looked like winning easily when he cruised into a clear lead early in the straight but ran green in front and was all out to hold the strong late challenge of Thundering Home.
Hopefully there is more to come from Assam Black who has done well since a wind op in the summer.
