Highland Holds On

Highland Retreat gave the 40 members of the Harry Fry Racing Club their most valuable success so far with the narrowest possible victory in the Mares Listed Chase at Doncaster on Friday.

By extending the recent high strike rate of the yard she took our score for the season to 28 winners from 93 runners with a prize money total of over £330,000.

Highland Retreat made just about every yard of the running but would have been headed in one more stride as Emily Gray came from the clouds to deliver a withering late challenge.

No-one was sure who had won until the photo showed that Highland Retreat had held on by a whisker on ground that was faster than ideal.

With Noel Fehily required elsewhere we were able to call on the finest substitute in AP McCoy who rode an excellent forcing race from the front and kept just enough up his sleeve to hold off Emily Gray in a nail biting finish.

Highland Retreat is a wonderfully tough, game and consistent mare who never runs a bad race. Looking ahead I could well send her next to Ireland for a Grade 2 Mares' Novice Chase at Limerick on March 15.
