Thomas foot perfect

Thomas Brown made the perfect start to his chasing career with an all the way success in the Iron Stand Beginners' Chase at Ascot on Friday.

The jaunty manner of his victory helped make up for the disappointing display by Blue Buttons on her chasing debut 24 hours earlier at Wincanton.

I've decided she is just too small for fences so she will next be back over hurdles, a discipline at which she excels.

We always thought Thomas Brown would make a chaser and I couldn't have been happier with the way he went about his work at Ascot, jumping to the manner born and staying on strongly to secure a decisive victory over a trip short of his best.

Noel Fehily was delighted with Thomas Brown, too, so the plan is to bring him back to Ascot in a month's time for the valuable Class 1 Mitie Novices' Chase with the option of another trip to the course in February for the Reynoldstown Chase.

I'd like to think exciting times lie ahead for this horse who was certainly foot perfect yesterday. Here's hoping.
