Shuil victory bitter sweet

The sight of Noel Fehily suffering a heavy fall at Newton Abbot on Wednesday took the gloss off of Shuil Royale winning well a little later in the afternoon.

Noel has been such a key part of the team since we started and was down to ride Shuil Royale as usual.

But he was on his way to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for extensive tests on his back by the time the horse won with substitute jockey Daryl Jacob.

Shuil Royale really appreciated the sounder surface & he won nicely from Indian Castle by 8 lengths. He was so unlucky last time at Newbury when he lost his chance after being badly hampered just as he was moving stealthily into the race.

We were hopeful of a big run at Newton Abbot as he had dropped to a mark of 132 which was only two pounds above his rating when he won the Summer Cup at Uttoxeter last summer.

The plan is to take him back for the same race late in June, hopefully with Noel back in the saddle. Fingers firmly crossed.
