Knight signs off in style
Whataknight took our score for the new season to five with a decisive victory in a valuable long distance handicap hurdle at Haydock on Saturday.
It was the perfect way for him to sign off after a rewarding first campaign over hurdles. He has more than earned a nice summer's break now and when he races again in the autumn it will be over fences.
Decent ground is the key to Whataknight who showed in his point-to-point days that staying is his forte.
He was Richard Barber's last winner between the flags and then won four more races for Richard's grandson Jack Barber before joining us last autumn.
Whataknight made a bright start over hurdles but was clobbered by the handicapper after he was just touched off by Emerging Force at Doncaster in February and then disappointed in tacky ground at Exeter.
He ran much better last time at Cheltenham over an inadequate trip and stepped up on that at Haydock with the help of a brave ride by Aidan Coleman who eased him through a narrow gap on the rails on their way to a commanding success.
It was good to see Aidan ride a winner for us after his misfortune in losing out on our mare Lady Of Lamanvar who was demoted to second after winning the mares' final at Newbury.
