Golden Birthday gained an overdue first success in the closing bumper at Wincanton on Tuesday.

A work in progress he had shown a fair degree of promise in both his runs since joining us and took a step forward with a resolute victory at Wincanton's final meeting of the season.

Golden Birthday was too keen for his own good when he finished third on his debut for us at Kempton in February.

So we dropped him in next time when he finished third back at Kempton just over a month later and Richard Johnson employed similar tactics to good effect on Tuesday.

Golden Birthday will have a summer break now that he has won his first race before switching to hurdles on decent ground in the autumn.
