Valuable success for Queen

A timely change of plan ensured that Desert Queen made a winning start over fences in a valuable Listed mares chase at Market Rasen on Thursday.

We originally intended to take her to Fontwell for a mares beginners' chase at Fontwell 24 hours later.

But quick ground at the Sussex venue persuaded us to switch Desert Queen at the last minute to Market Rasen against better, more experienced opposition on more suitable going.

Thankfully that decision paid off handsomely as she made all the running, jumping impressively before seeing off the sustained challenge of La Vaticane in the closing stages.

Desert Queen definitely came off best after a bit of a bumping match between the pair at the final fence. She then galloped clear again on the flat to win by five lengths.

Nick Scholfield was thrilled with Desert Queen who quickly got into a good rhythm without being too keen and treated the fences with much more respect than she used to show her hurdles.

It was a perfect introduction to chasing for a talented mare who will aimed at similar races against her own sex.
