Thomas Brown made a fine start to the season with an impressive success in the £24,760 Betfred Lotto Giveaway Chase at Aintree on Saturday.

He was given a positive ride by Niall Madden at the course where he famously gained his greatest victory on Numbersixvalverde in the Grand National ten years ago.

Niall has come over from Ireland for six weeks to try his luck in this country so this was an immediate reward for his initiative.

We had planned to run Thomas Brown at Ascot a week ago over three miles but fast ground there persuaded us to switch him to Aintree over two and a half miles on more suitable going.

We were a bit worried by the drop in trip but he travelled well, jumping superbly, was left clear four out and though getting a bit lonely in front held on for a highly pleasing triumph.

Thomas Brown has plenty of options in the weeks ahead including the Hennessy Gold Cup but we'll see how he comes out of this race before making a plan.

In the meantime we will try to give Niall plenty of support when Noel Fehily is not available.
