American Gigolo completed his hat-trick on the flat with a narrow success in the Betway Stayers’ Handicap at Newcastle on Tuesday evening.

The 358 mile journey from Seaborough to the North East took fully six hours but it was more than justified when American Gigolo landed the £15,562 first prize at his first attempt over two miles.

He has been running on the flat because he doesn’t enjoy deep winter ground conditions over hurdles.

He has a decent turn of foot, is progressing nicely and we thought he would appreciate going up in trip to two miles at Newcastle.

He travelled like the best horse in the race, edged ahead of the favourite Dubawi Fifty over a furlong out and held off the challenge of Stargazer by a neck.

American Gigolo was given an excellent ride by Fran Berry who has partnered him in all four of his outings on the flat.

The horse could be back over hurdles next at Aintree if the ground is suitable before a summer campaign in the more valuable staying flat handicaps.
