Batsman digs deep
Evergreen Opening Batsman took his winnings past £100,000 with the ninth success of his career at Fontwell on Friday.
He has been a tremendous flag-bearer for the yard since we started training and showed bags of enthusiasm in the two mile, five furlong handicap chase as he saw off the persistent challenge of Gowanauthat by a neck in a fierce duel on the run-in.
Our assistant Mikey Legg got a fine tune out of Opening Batsman on his return to form at Ludlow recently and shone on him again at Fontwell where bagging the rail after the last fence probably made the difference,
Now aged eleven Opening Batsman won the same race two years ago off a mark of 140 before a long drought while he was just too high in the handicap to be competitive.
Once he was dropped to a more realistic mark of 129 at Ludlow earlier this month he bounced back with renewed confidence.
It makes sense to keep him on the go now while he is enjoying himself on the prevailing good ground that he loves.
