Golden Birthday extended our winning sequence with a decisive first victory over fences at Stratford on Thursday.
A wonderfully versatile horse, he has won nine times in a variety of disciplines since Gary Stevens asked us to train him and is now showing a fair bit of promise as a chaser.
While he wasn’t foot perfect on his debut over fences last month when he finished second at Uttoxeter, he learned from the experience and was much better at Stratford, jumping with more confidence as he warmed to the task under Kieron Edgar.
We wanted him to have a lead and the plan worked well before he moved stylishly ahead of El Terremoto after the second last and quickly drew clear to win by sixteen lengths.
Next time Golden Birthday runs there is no reason why we can’t let him bowl along in front and attack his fences.
He is likely to be seen next in another novice chase at Stratford on September 8 under a penalty.
If that goes well we will maybe raise our sights with Golden Birthday who does need decent ground.
So we will keep him on the go until conditions turn against him. Then he can have a mid winter break.
