Wotzizname wins at Doncaster
It was good to see Wotzizname get back on track with a narrow success in the Class 4 Novice Chase at Doncaster on Friday.
But there was a sting in the tail when his jockey Noel Fehily was hit with a six day ban for his use of the whip.
The suspension rules him out of the Betfair meeting at Newbury where he was due to ride Misterton for us in the big hurdle.
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve counted my blessings at having Noel on my side since I started training.
He was brilliant again on Wotzizname whose jumping was far from foot perfect. But with encouragement from the jockey he kept pulling out more in the final mile and a big, bold jump at the last fence sealed victory by half a length from the favourite Mount Mews who looked to be going the better at the time.
It is fair to say that Wotzizname also didn’t jump well last time at Cheltenham when he finished fourth behind Robinsfirth.
But he has an engine and should become more fluent with experience. I will sit down with his owners before making a plan for him for the rest of the season.
At this stage it probably makes sense to keep him away from the major tracks where the fences are a bit more demanding.
