Roland extends unbeaten record
King Roland extended his unbeaten record with a cosy victory under a penalty in a competitive bumper at Ffos Las on Tuesday.
Although he was not as visually impressive as on his bumper debut at Uttoxeter this was a much deeper race and he gave all the field a start before finished strongly to beat the course and distance winner Stick With Bill, who was receiving 5lbs, by a length.
While the runner up was always handy King Roland must have been fifteen lengths, maybe more, behind him for the first half of the race.
Successful in his only point-to-point, he is a grand, big, imposing type who likes to get on with things and was extremely keen on the way to the start.
Noel Fehily did well to anchor him in the rear before they started to make stealthy headway on the final turn.
King Roland kept on to lead a furlong out and was firmly on top at the line with a number of finishers stretched out far behind him.
As he is very much a work in progress we did not enter him in the bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.
What we have to decide now is whether to take him to the Punchestown Festival or draw stumps with him for the season. Either way he is going to be a very exciting prospect over hurdles next winter.
