We enjoyed an early double at Wincanton on Boxing Day before our only other runner of the afternoon Ena Baie finished a close third in a highly competitive handicap hurdle at Leopardstown.

The horses are running much better now and Lightly Squeeze gave us the perfect start at Wincanton with an easy success under top weight in the opening novice handicap hurdle.

He was third in the race a year ago and has taken longer than we imagined to win over hurdles, so it was good to see him get his head in front in an incident packed contest.

Lightly Squeeze is settling better and seeing the trip out well. He is entered again at Taunton on Monday in a 0-110 handicap which has to be an option if he comes out of the race in good order.

He was given a good ride by Sean Bowen who again shone as he pinched five lengths out of the gate on Whitehotchillifili who made all the running in the mares' novice hurdle and came home unchallenged for the Chasing Gold Racing Club.

As she stays well and loves the ground it made sense to keep the tactics simple. She also jumped much better this time after some intensive schooling under the expert eye of Henrietta Knight at her yard near Wantage.

Whitehotchillifili will be out again within a month while underfoot conditions are in her favour.
